Riley, the teenage protagonist of Inside Out, will have to deal with new emotions in the long-awaited sequel to the successful 2015 film that grossed almost US$900 million at the worldwide box office and arrived this June 13 to Latin American cinemas.

“One of the main characteristics of emotional development in adolescence is the ease with which both positive and negative emotions are aroused,” Dr. Laurence Steinberg , a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Temple University in Philadelphia, told CNN. His feelings are stronger than those of children or adults.
And by adolescence, the brain has developed a greater capacity for abstract thinking, which leads to more complex emotions, says Damour, author of “The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents.”

Anxiety
The antagonist of the new Pixar film is the personification of Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke). Anxiety tries to control Riley’s life by making sure she is prepared for any possible negative outcomes and makes sure she never makes a mistake by anticipating worst-case scenarios ( common characteristics that happen when you have anxiety ). According to Pixar , this new emotion seeks to “push Riley toward perfection” as this “means being much closer to achieving her goals.”
Shame
Inside, Riley is still that eternally happy girl her friends and family know and love, says the official synopsis for Inside Out 2 , but her sense of self is changing so quickly that she struggles to balance the new emotions coming her way. One of them, Shame (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser). Riley, like any teenager, is more embarrassed because she better understands what others may be thinking about her, Damour explains.
Envy
Envy (voiced by Ayo Edebiri) manifests itself in Riley to a lesser extent but is forceful: he is jealous of everything others have and longs for it. Damour points out that during adolescence it is common for envy to be felt much more. “They become envious because they can better see the comparisons between themselves and others,” she adds.
Ennui
“Bored and lethargic, with a well-practiced sidelong glance, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality, when she feels like it,” is how Pixar describes this new emotion (voiced by Adelele Exarchopoulos) that is part of the adolescent life of the 13-year-old girl.
But what is Ennui? is a word of French origin that refers to a feeling of boredom that coincides with a more or less profound impression of emptiness, according to the National Center for Textual and Lexical Resources , a French organization that puts linguistic and textual data online.
