Games To Play If You Liked Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
However, if you have already completed the story campaign and co-op missions and are starting to get bored, then we have compiled a list of other games that are worth paying attention to. Both for fans of the genre and new fans of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
Platforms: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
The first part of the series cannot boast of such a beautiful picture, and it is not necessary to play it for the sake of the plot – Space Marine 2 turned out to be quite independent. However, if the new game hooked you with simple gameplay, linear levels and a short duration, then the first Space Marine is also worth giving a chance. The battles in it are just as dynamic and brutal, and the enemies in terms of lore are even more interesting – instead of tyranids, you have to fight with more intelligent orcs. They constantly shout something and make insidious plans. The game takes 7-9 hours to complete, constantly gives out new guns to destroy opponents, and ends at the moment when it starts to get boring. Of course, Space Marine 2 is better in everything, but the first part can still entertain you for several evenings.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series.
The role-playing game Owlcat is almost the complete opposite of Space Marine 2 in terms of gameplay. In Rogue Trader, you need to read a lot, understand the history, thoughtfully level up your heroes and take your time with decisions in turn-based battles. However, if you are a fan of Pathfinder, Divinity and Baldur’s Gate, and you are also interested in the universe of Warhammer 40,000, then you probably won’t find a better modern game for getting acquainted with the setting.
In Rogue Trader, the player takes on the role of a Rogue Trader – the heir to an ancient dynasty of privateers who run a trading empire and explore the borders of the Imperium. During the journey, you will have to assemble your own retinue, explore new planets and, of course, destroy the enemies of humanity. The game introduces the world of Warhammer 40,000 in detail, and the built-in encyclopedia will help you understand the nuances.
Owlcat games are usually plagued with bugs, but almost a year has passed since the release. During this time, the authors fixed the main problems, and also managed to make the first story addition. It was called Void Shadows and will be released on September 24.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series
A cooperative shooter from Fatshark in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where players fight heretics and xenos against the backdrop of ruined cities and spaceships. A minimum of plot, reading and boredom – only non-stop action, iconic guns and a dynamic soundtrack. Darktide still has mixed reviews due to weak support: the developers are in no hurry to add new content. However, the key mechanics are well done, and the pace and style of the game are as reminiscent of Space Marine 2 as possible. You can deal with hordes of enemies in a team of four people.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch.
Wolfenstein: with simple graphics, high dynamics, crowds of enemies and aggressive music. As in Space Marine 2, you will play as a brave space marine who has taken on a deadly mission. The main character is looking for a fragment of a mysterious energy source on Graia – the same forge world where the events of the first Space Marine unfolded. The planet is about to be captured by cultists, traitors and demons of Chaos. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a great alternative to Space Marine 2, and don’t let the retro style scare you. This is a very dynamic game with hordes of various enemies, and it is extremely difficult to tear yourself away from destroying heretics. After the story campaign, you can go to the horde mode with endless waves of opponents: in general, experience an ordinary day in the life of the inhabitants of the world of Warhammer 40,000.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War series
Fans of real-time strategy and grand battles should pay attention to the Dawn of War trilogy. Here, players have the opportunity to fight not only on the side of the Imperium, but for almost any faction from the world of Warhammer 40,000. All three games turned out to be very different: for example, the sequel added role-playing elements and character upgrades. Fans love the first two parts the most, but the third, the most controversial, is also worth mentioning.
The Dawn of War releases are distinguished by their scale: this is where you can see what the most powerful forces and weapons of the world of Warhammer 40,000 are capable of. If in most other games we control at best a small group of characters, then strategies allow you to arrange large battles with the participation of equipment and dozens of units.
Gears of War Series
Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series
An epic franchise about the war between humanity and the Locust, a faction of humanoid monsters that lived underground and one day decided to come to the surface. The first Gears of War is usually considered the weakest, and each subsequent game in the series has become more interesting.
Here, too, you will have to destroy hundreds of enemies with a variety of guns, and all this against the backdrop of an endless war that has no end or edge – just like in Warhammer 40,000. Perhaps the main obstacle to getting to know the series is that you cannot fully explore it without an Xbox console. The first, fourth and fifth parts were ported to PC, but the best games in the series – the second and third – remained on consoles. In the summer, Microsoft announced Gears of War: E-Day – a prequel game, the plot of which begins on the first day of the war.
Helldivers 2
Platforms: PC, PS5
The main online hit of 2024, which in some places is very reminiscent of Warhammer 40,000. There is also an endless war, a “holy” government, short life expectancy for soldiers and a lot of powerful weapons that destroy all living things. One of the main opponents is an army of beetles that captures entire planets.
In recent months, the popularity of the game has fallen sharply. First, it got into a scandal with the mandatory registration of PlayStation accounts, and then the developers changed the balance, which upset many fans. But Helldivers 2 is still a fun cooperative game with intense battles, and a major update with a new, third faction is expected to be released soon. So finding a team will probably become easier.
World War Z
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch
Space Marine 2 is based on the studio’s previous game, the cooperative zombie action game World War Z. It was here that they tested technologies that allow hundreds of enemies to be displayed on the screen at the same time, in this case, the living dead. Therefore, the gameplay is very similar: only instead of battles on planets from Warhammer 40,000, in World War Z players travel to different cities on Earth.
Over the past few years, the zombie shooter has received many content updates, so there will be something to do in it. However, it is better to find friends to complete it: the game opens up on a high difficulty level, where good coordination in a team is needed.
Remnant 2
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Another cooperative action game, with a similar formula. The plot centers on the surviving representatives of humanity, who travel through creepy parallel worlds and fight various monsters. To explore new biomes, you have to carefully select weapons and equipment, and fights with final bosses require coordinated work.
You can play Remnant 2 alone, but it is better to play with a team: it will be more interesting and fun. The authors continue to release updates and add content, opening portals to new worlds with creepy monsters.
Doom and Doom: Eternal
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch
If Space Marine 2 was all about non-stop action, the latest Doom games do a great job of delivering on that promise. They’re essentially a series of arenas where demons come from all sides and you can’t stop for even a second. The destruction of the creatures is accompanied by the roaring soundtrack of the legendary Mick Gordon.
The next installment in the series, Doom: The Dark Ages, won’t be out until 2025, but Doom and Doom: Eternal haven’t gotten old. Great optimization, a wide range of weapons, and a variety of enemies are all you need to be happy.
Bulletstorm
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch
A first-person shooter, the heroes of which, after a crash, find themselves on a wild planet with crazy psychos and dangerous nature. The single-player campaign is as short as in Space Marine 2, but very fun and bright. Most of the time you have to deal with enemies, and do it beautifully: for stylish kills you get extra points.
Bulletstorm was released back in 2011, but did not receive a sequel – the shooter failed in sales. However, several years later it was re-released: it is better to play the Full Clip edition with all the add-ons and an improved picture.
After some time, you can return to Space Marine 2 itself: the authors have already prepared a plan for the next two years. Fans can expect new modes, enemies, maps, as well as additional PvE missions and the ability to customize fighters. The game also has a cool multiplayer – you can easily spend a couple of dozen hours there.
