7 best Chrome Flags to customize your browser

Flags in other browsers

Even browsers other than Chrome have a panel of flags or experimental features. For example, in Microsoft Edge you can go to edge://flags to see the flags. As it is a Chromium browser, many of these are the same as Chrome’s, although Microsoft also adds its own. On the other hand, Firefox also has the internal URL about:config that provides access to the experimental features that Mozilla has added.

The best Chrome Flags worth trying

Once you’re in the Chrome Flags panel, you’ll always have a search engine. Simply enter part of the name of the feature you want to activate to find it in seconds. With this in mind, you’re ready to try out these experimental features of Google’s browser.

Smooth Scrolling

Description . The Smooth Scrolling feature enables smoother, more fluid scrolling when browsing web pages. Instead of abruptly jumping between sections, this option smooths out the transition between different points on the page, providing a more pleasant user experience. It’s great for those who tend to visit very long pages.

Touch UI Layout

Description . This feature makes Chrome easier to use in touch-enabled environments and on devices that have touch-enabled displays. I recommend enabling it if you have a Windows tablet or convertible laptop.

Fluent Scrollbars

Description . Uses Windows scroll bars instead of displaying the classic layout. A highly recommended option to improve the appearance of Chrome on this operating system.

Windows 11 Mica title bar

Description . Another design improvement for Windows. It makes Chrome use the Mica layout implemented by Microsoft and gain new transparency in the title bar.

Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents

Description . Allows you to force dark mode on most websites. This effect is produced by an inversion of colors and the function has several modes and parameters.

Parallel Downloading

  • enable-parallel-downloading

Description . Parallel Downloading speeds up downloads by splitting files into smaller parts that are downloaded simultaneously. By enabling this feature, you may notice an improvement in overall download speed, especially for large files.

Tab Scrolling

Description . Tab Scrolling allows you to scroll through open tabs when there are many open in the browser bar. Instead of having the tabs shrink to an impractical size, this feature enables side-by-side scrolling to easily view all of them.

Partial swap

Description . This experimental feature improves memory management and increases performance in the browser. Try enabling it to make Chrome run faster and manage resources more effectively.

Access many more Chrome Flags

All the experimental features I’ve mentioned here are available in the stable version of Google Chrome. However, in the Beta, Dev and Canary channels it is possible to find some additional flags. Remember that you can install Google Chrome Beta, Dev or Canary alongside the stable version and use both browsers interchangeably thanks to the synchronization provided by the Google account.
