How to Set a Password for an Application on a PC

Protecting applications on a PC with a password is sometimes necessary in cases where the device is used by several people. This can be done using special programs that block access to executable files or entire folders. In this guide, we will look at both methods.

Game Protector

The most simple and convenient program, which even an inexperienced user can understand. The only drawback of Game Protector is its considerable age, which is why it may not work with some applications. To install protection, you need to do the following: 

  • Download and install Game Protector on your computer;
  • Run the utility and click the Open button;
  • Specify the path to the program folder and select the launch file. You can find it by the EXE extension;
  • In the Password Protect field, enter the password twice;
  • Be sure to check the Create Backup box. This creates a backup copy of the EXE file to restore access in case you forget the code;
  • Click the Protect button;

Now when you try to launch the software, you will need to enter the specified password. If you have forgotten the code, you must use the backup copy of the launch file, which is stored in the application folder. Delete the encoded EXE file, change the backup extension from VAK to EXE.

My Lockbox

The main purpose of My Lockbox is to protect directories and their contents. But the utility is also great for blocking the launch of applications installed on the device. In this case, the password is set for the entire folder, not for a separate file. To do this, you need to:

Now when you try to launch the software, you will need to enter the specified password. If you have forgotten the code, you must use the backup copy of the launch file, which is stored in the application folder. Delete the encoded EXE file, change the backup extension from VAK to EXE.

  • Install and run My LockBox on your computer;
  • In the field that appears, enter your password and email address;
  • Click on the “Select” button, specify the path to the application folder you want to protect and click “OK”.

To disable protection, simply open My Lockbox Control Panel, select the desired folder and click the “Disable protection” button. This can also be done in the utility’s built-in file manager. And before removing My Lockbox from your computer, don’t forget to remove the lock from all programs.   

All other analogues, from ExeLock and Free App Lock to AxCrypt and Folder Lock , work on a similar principle. They differ only in the appearance of the interface and the presence of additional functions.
