Learn how to remove an administrator in Windows 10 with our easy step-by-step guide. Manage user accounts efficiently and ensure the security of your computer.
Sometimes Windows 10 may have several accounts with administrator rights created by mistake or for temporary purposes. You can learn how to get rid of unnecessary ones from our guide.
Who is an administrator in Windows 10
An administrator in Windows 10 is a user with extended access rights. Such accounts can install and remove programs, make changes to the system, and manage other accounts, including creating and deleting users. These rights allow you to control security and privacy settings, which is critical for overall device management.
Methods to remove administrator account
Since Windows 10 is a fairly flexible operating system, the developers have provided several options for deleting unnecessary accounts in advance.
Removing via “Options”
- Open the Start menu and go to Settings;
- Go to Accounts > Family & Other Users;
- Find the administrator account you want to delete;
- Click on it, select Delete, and then confirm the action.
- Press Win + R and type “control” to launch “Control Panel”.
- Go to User Accounts > Manage another account;
- Select the account you want to delete and click “Delete Account”;
- Select whether you want to keep this account’s personal files and confirm the deletion.
Command Prompt (CMD)
- Open PowerShell with administrator rights (via Win + X);
- Enter the command “Remove-LocalUser “username”” and press Enter;
- The account will be deleted after the command is confirmed.
Using Local Security Policy for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise Administrators
- Press Win + R, type “secpol.msc” and press Enter;
- Go to Local Policies > User Rights Assignment;
- Find the account you want to change and remove administrator rights;
- After this, the account will become default and can be deleted through Settings or Control Panel.
Removing unnecessary administrator accounts can make your computer easier to use and increase its security. However, it is important to remember that you can only remove accounts if you have another active administrator account, so as not to lose access to system management.
