Wondering what to do when you overeat? Check out these practical tips to help alleviate discomfort and get back on track after indulging a bit too much.During the holidays, it is customary to set rich tables: even if you try a little bit of everything, there is a risk of suffering from overeating. We tell you how to reduce the negative consequences and recover faster.
What to Do When You Overeat.
Drink water
There is no need to guzzle water until you feel sick; one glass will be enough after a large meal. Water will help digestion if you ate dry food (i.e., the reason for your gluttony was not soup or stew), and will help remove excess salt that you probably got in excess with your food. Continue drinking water throughout the rest of the day to maintain your hydration balance and feel better.
Take a walk
A light walk will help stimulate digestion and balance blood sugar levels. The walk can even be a bike ride. The main thing is not to overdo it, your goal is not to set a record, but just to have a leisurely ride.
Don’t lie down
We understand that you want to lie down, but this is a bad idea. Firstly, you will miss the chance to burn off some of the calories you just ate, at least by doing chores around the house. And secondly, doctors do not recommend lying down on a full stomach: the food can, so to speak, come back up. Lying down can worsen acid reflux, and sleep slows down digestion.
Burn calories
Wait about three to four hours after a large meal and, when you feel that the food has been digested, start exercising. It doesn’t matter what it is: jogging, strength training, or one of the sports games. Physical activity will speed up your metabolism, prevent constipation, and help burn extra calories.
Give up soda
What you definitely shouldn’t drink with food is soda. The gas can make you feel worse, because your stomach is already full. And not all the bubbles from the drink come out as burps, some continue their journey through the digestive system, which is already having a hard time after overeating.
Don’t finish eating
You have already overeaten, the worst thing you can do in this case is to force yourself to finish the rest of the plate. Use the opportunity to take a break during a long feast, return to the dish after a break if the desire not to offend the hostess is more important to you than your own health. But in any case, no one will be offended if you admit: it was so delicious that you ate so much, and there is no room for another bite!
More food but fewer calories
Don’t repeat the mistake at your next meal. Even if you’re overcome by a ravenous appetite, choose lighter, low-calorie dishes to avoid making the situation worse and give your body time to recover. Avoid fatty meat, fresh white bread, and fried potatoes. Whole grains are more appropriate than rice or pasta. Fiber won’t hurt!
