How to beat Kaga in Baldur’s Gate 3

The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is filled with moral dilemmas and difficult choices. Each of your decisions affects the further course of events and can lead to unexpected consequences.

One such moment is related to Kaga. She is a very contradictory character in herself: at first glance, she seems like a strict but fair guardian of order, but there are dark motives hidden behind her actions.

There is a unique quest associated with this character that can be easily missed during your first playthrough of the game. We will tell you how to expose Kaga, whether it is worth killing her, and also suggest what strategy to follow in the fight with her.

Who is Kaga?

Kaga is the temporary leader of the Emerald Grove druids, having taken over after the disappearance of the original leader, Halsin. When we first visit the Emerald Grove, we find ourselves caught up in a conflict between the druids and the tiefling refugees.

The druids, led by the stern and powerful Kaga, intend to perform a ritual to seal the grove from outsiders. For the tieflings, this means exile and doom for the people.

To get to the quest with Kaga, you need to talk to the characters in the grove. First, talk to Zevlor, the leader of the tieflings. He will tell you about the difficult situation that his people are hostage to, and about the hostility of the druids. Zevlor will advise you to find Kaga and try to convince her not to seal the grove, in order to avoid the death of innocent creatures.

Finding Kaga will reveal an unpleasant scene: she is lynching a tiefling girl named Arabella. The reason for this was the theft of a sacred idol of the druid god Silvanus. Kaga intimidates the girl, and the player can intervene and convince her to let the child go. If you do not, Arabella will die, which will close access to several quests related to her in the subsequent acts of the game.

Regardless of how the scene with Arabella unfolds, you will later have the opportunity to meet Kaga in the Stone Hall. Talking to her will reveal more about her motives and the ritual she is performing. It will be revealed that she intends to permanently seal the grove to protect it from outsiders.

However, this ritual will not only close the grove from outsiders, but also deprive anyone who wants to hide here or return, including the archdruid Halsin, captured by the goblins, of shelter. During this dialogue, the player will have the opportunity to directly confront Kaga. But do not rush to bare your blade, because Kaga is not as simple as it seems at first glance.

Gather information about Kage

After talking to Kaga, we recommend that you thoroughly search her room. In the room, you will find her personal chest, hidden behind a stone shelf. You can open it with a key, having previously stolen it from Kaga, or by breaking the chest.

 Chest location on the map

Inside the chest you will find a note from a certain Olodan, addressed to Kaga. The letter will contain information about a meeting in the swamps near a tree, which is where our path lies. It is extremely important to complete this quest before the liberation of Halsin or before the alliance with Mintara and the goblins, otherwise you will not be able to catch Kaga, and the task will fail.

In the swamps

Let’s go to Aunt Ethel’s Marshes. To get to this location, you need to go through the extinct village to the southeastern corner of the map. There you will notice an old pier surrounded by boulders. Get to a small island next to the pier, in the center of which a massive tree rises.

We warn you that there are enemies waiting for us near the tree – several mud mephits and tree wides. We cannot avoid clashes with them, so here are some tips on how to deal with the mobs quickly and without unnecessary losses:

  • Focus on the mud mephits. They are weak on their own, but they have the ability to summon more of their kind.
  • Tree Wides, on the other hand, are quite strong, but are countered by fire spells. The best tactic is to use the environment: set fire to the twisting vines underneath them, use fire arrows or spells.

Approach the tree after giving the enemies a hard time. Hovering over it reveals a hidden cache. Inside is a letter that reveals that Kaga intends to take advantage of the instability caused by the upcoming battle with the goblins to seize power in the Emerald Grove by forging an alliance with the druids of the Circle of Shadows.

Kagi’s Exposure

It’s time to expose Kaga’s betrayal. Having obtained all the necessary evidence, we return back to the Emerald Grove. Tell Kaga that you are aware of her cooperation with the shadow druids, during the dialogue give the note from the swamps to Rathu. Later, the shadow druids themselves will intervene in the conversation. From this point on, you have two options: immediately enter the battle or try to convince Kaga to reconsider her position and side with you.

If you choose brute force, you will face not only the shadow druids, but also Kaga herself. In this battle, only Rath and his wolf will be on your side.

If you try to persuade Kaga, which requires a successful Persuasion check (difficulty 15), she will side with you along with the other forest druids. This will give you the upper hand in combat against the shadow mages.

Even if Kaga survives the battle, she will still face the consequences of her decisions: if you previously allowed her to punish Arabella, the girl’s parents will poison the merciless elf. You can also inform Halsin of Kaga’s actions, in which case she will appear before the druids and answer for her betrayal.

Battle with Kaga

As we said earlier, you can enter the battle with Kaga during the first dialogue with her. However, in this case, you will miss the opportunity to expose her. The battle will not be easy: the advantage is not on your side, the druids will rise up against you. Only Rath will fight for you. You will have to fight the druids, and at the same time help the refugees, otherwise many of them will die.

When fighting Kaga, it is recommended to use tanks (such as La’ezel or Karlah) to distract her while the rest of the party attacks from a distance. She has abilities that restrict movement. If Kaga uses Plant Growth, use Jump to escape the dangerous area.

Consequences of Choice and Rewards

The outcome of your decision will affect the further development of events in the game. Here are the possible endings associated with Kaga:

  • By exposing Kaga, the druids will be able to restore order in the grove, the plot of the dark druids will be revealed, and the tieflings will have a chance to save themselves. If you are playing as a druid, we recommend talking to Kaga after the fight with Olodan. She will give you one of the best staves to start the game – it makes the owner immune to entangling vines, and also allows you to create them.
  • If you freed Halsin but did not go on the quest to expose Kaga, after his return to the Grove he will also order you to leave the refugees alone. The tieflings will be able to leave the grove without losses. Kaga will remain unpunished, the shadow druids’ plan will not be revealed.
  • If you decide to kill Kaga immediately after talking to Zevlor, you will have to fight the druids. If you win, the ritual of sealing the grove will be stopped, and the tieflings will have a chance to escape.
  • If you went on the quest to expose Kaga, but decided to kill her in the finale, then order in the grove will be restored by the efforts of the remaining druids, and the tieflings will be able to leave peacefully.
  • After the battle with Kaga, her body can be looted to obtain the necklace “Broodmother’s Revenge”, which deals additional poison damage when healing. “

Regardless of the outcome, be sure to tell Zevlor, the leader of the tieflings, about everything that happened. In gratitude for your help, he will give you the gloves “Pride of the Hellrider”, which give +1 to strength saves, and also give resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage from weapons whenever you heal an ally.
