Understanding Alif Lam Qomariah and Examples

In Islam, reading the Qur’an is a great and noble worship, that it is obligatory in seeking knowledge to learn it. Muslims are required to read the Qur’an properly and correctly (tartil). Muslims must know when to stop or when to continue reading.

This is what is then regulated in the law of tajwid science, one of which is how to read the alif lam qomariah reading. For the alif lam reading there are 2 reading laws, namely alif lam qamariah and alif lam syamsiah. Both have quite significant differences, in the book entitled Basics of Tajwid Science by Dr. Marzuki, M.Ag., the difference is seen in the letters. And the next difference lies in how to read it.In reading alif lam qomariyah, the alif lam letter is read clearly, while for alif lam syamsiah, the Alif lam is read melted or unclear. In addition, the written form of both will look different.

What is meant by Tajweed Law?

The word tajwid comes from Arabic, and means doing something well and beautifully. Rooted in the word ‘Jawadda’, this term means taking letters out of their place and giving properties to each letter.

This means that the science of tajwid is the basis for being able to read and learn how to read or recite the holy verses of the Qur’an properly and correctly. Sheikh Zakariyya al-Ansari explained that reading the Qur’an by changing the grammar or changing the meaning is a sinful act.

However, if it does not change the grammar or meaning then it is not praying. So it is fitting, as Muslims, we are required to learn the science of tajwid. The evidence for which Muslims are required to learn the science of tajwid is in the word of Allah Ta’ala which reads:

اَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلْ

Meaning: “or more than half of that, and read the Koran slowly.”

[QS. Al-Muzzammil : 4].

From the verse above, it is confirmed that Allah Ta’ala ordered the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu’alaihi wa sallam to read the Qur’an with tartil, that is, slowly and beautifying the pronunciation of each letter.

The law of studying the science of tajwid itself is fardhu kifayah , which is to fulfill the obligations of other Muslims after someone has studied it. Meanwhile, practicing the science of tajwid is fardhu ‘ain for every reader of the Qur’an (qori’).

However, even though the law of studying the science of tajwid is fardhu kifayah , Muslims still have the obligation to read the holy book of the Qur’an properly and correctly. This is based on the words of the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu’alaihi wa sallam, namely:

God willing

Meaning: “The best of you are those who study the Koran and teach it.” [HR. Bukhari].

In reading the Quran, it is required to read it according to the science of tajwid. Well, for Grameds who want to learn the science of tajwid, you can read the book Tajwid Science Lessons

The Qur’an is currently equipped with various punctuation marks. So it makes it easier for beginners who want to learn to read the Koran slowly and learn the recitation.

When we read the verses of the Qur’an, there are actually the easiest characteristics to notice. This is what underlies the difference between alif lam syamsiah and alif lam qomariah. Here are the characteristics:

The characteristics of Alif Lam Qomariyah are:

  • Alif lam qomariah contains sukun movement.
  • How to read alif lam qomariah is to read it clearly or explicitly (Izhar).
  • The letters after Alif lam do not have the meaning of tasydid.

The characteristics of Alif Lam Syamsiah are:

  • Alif lam syamsiah does not have sukun harakat.
  • The way to read Alif Lam Syamsiah is that the Alif Lam is not clear or is combined with the next letter (idgham).
  • The letter after Alif Lam has the harakat tasydid.

These characteristics include the science of tajwid which needs to be practiced when you read the holy verses of the Qur’an.

Why Should Reading the Qur’an Use Tajweed Science?

Tajwid is by definition the science of how to read the Koran properly and correctly. Meanwhile, in terms of terms, the science of tajwid is a very useful science for learning how to pronounce a letter correctly regarding its nature, tarqiq, mad, tafkhim and others.

Reading the Koran is a noble act of worship, where every letter we read will be rewarded with ten good deeds, as said by the Prophet sallallaahu’alaihi wa sallam.

The science of Tajweed itself is needed so that we can read the holy book of the Qur’an properly and correctly. Then, why are we required to read the Qur’an using the correct science of Tajweed?

1. Know how to read the Koran properly.

One of the reasons why we must learn the science of Tajweed is so that when reading the Qur’an, we will know how to pronounce the letters based on their makhraj (where the letters come out).

In addition, so that we understand how to read related to the law of reading, when to stop or continue reading. Of course, these practices will make the quality of reading the Qur’an even better.

2. Know the etiquette of reading the Koran properly

The Qur’an is the noble word of Allah Ta’ala, so it is fitting that we read His word in the correct and best way possible, and try to avoid reading it carelessly.

By paying attention to each makhraj, the law of reading, to the punctuation when reading the Al-Qur’an is a form of good morals, and the best etiquette in reading the word of Allah.

3. Avoid Mistakes in Reading the Qur’an

The relationship between the science of tajwid and the Qur’an is that we will know where the reading errors are, both those read by ourselves and others. Because, reading the Qur’an is not the same as reading other sentences even though it uses Arabic or hadith.

If there is a mistake in reading, the meaning will automatically change. Therefore, it is not permissible to replace a letter or sentence in the Quran using another letter or sentence in Arabic even though the meaning is the same. This is because the Quran is the authentic word of Allah Ta’ala.

So, the benefit of this tajwid science is to prevent mistakes when reading the Qur’an. Both from the letters, harakat, structure, and meaning in each sentence, so that we avoid sin due to mistakes in reading the Qur’an.

4. Maintain the Purity of the Contents of the Reading of the Qur’an

Without being based on the correct knowledge of Tajweed, Muslims today will certainly read the Quran carelessly. Of course the bad impact is that it can change the form and meaning, so that the meaning contained is wrong.

The benefits of studying the principles of the Qur’an and the science of tajwid, which are studied well and seriously, will maintain the purity of the Qur’an and avoid changes in meaning.

5. Maintaining the Meaning of the Qur’an

The letters and verses in the Qur’an are the great words of Allah Ta’ala. Therefore, whoever tries to read and maintain these words of Allah, then the reward is great for him.

Many people can read the Qur’an, but often do not realize the importance of knowing the rules of reading and the length of the reading. In fact, if you read it wrong, the meaning will be different.

So, the benefits of studying the science of tajwid include keeping the Qur’an pure so that it does not experience a shift in meaning caused by reading errors. Come on, learn the complete laws of tajwid in the Practical Tajwid Lesson book guide.

The Difference Between Alif Lam Syamsiah and Alif Lam Qomariah

As explained above, there are some quite significant differences between Alif lam qomariyah and alif lam syamsiah. Here is the explanation:

  • Understanding Alif Lam Qomariah

Alif lam qomariah is included in the laws of tajwid science that we need to learn, in the science of tajwid alif lam qomariyah is also called Lam tarief.

The meaning of the letter alif lam qomariah is alif lam sukun meets the letters of qomariah. The meaning of alif lam (ال) qomariah found in this verse of the Qur’an must be read clearly and correctly.

Alif lam qomariyah or what is called lam ta’rif is alif lam that meets 14 qomariyah letters. The qomariah letters are:

  • ba (ب)
  • Jim (J)
  • ha (ح)
  • kho (خ)
  • ‘ayn (ع)
  • ghoin (غ)
  • fa (f)
  • qof (ق)
  • kaf (ك)
  • mim (م)
  • wow (و)
  • ha (ha)
  • hamzah (ء), and
  • yes (ي)

Alif lam qamariah is also called izhar qomariah. It is called izhar qamariah because the alif lam is read clearly or brightly when it meets the letters of the qomariah. Qomar itself in Arabic means moon, while Alif lam tarief is likened to a star.

The naming of Alif lam qomariah if explained by analogy, then the star that appears at night will remain bright even though it is illuminated by the light of the moon. That is the origin of the naming of alif lam qomariah. This is because in practice, if we read the law of reading alif lam qamariah, we are required to read the alif lam clearly or brightly like a star even though there is light from the qomar or moon.

  • Understanding Alif Lam Syamsiyah

Alif lam syamsiah is alif lam or lam ta’rif which is opposite the 14 syamsiah letters. The letters are:

Facebook

If there is a lam ta’rif letter which then meets one of the letters above, then the law of reading the alif lam is that it is not heard or goes directly to the next letter.

For example, from the phrase “النساء”, it can be seen that the letter alif lam meets nun. So, how to read the phrase, the letter alif lam is not read or goes directly to the letter nun. So the reading is ‘An-Nisa’.

Alif lam syamsiah is also called idgham syamsiah. Idgham means entering, in practice, the alif lam phrase that immediately enters the next letter makes alif lam syamsiyah categorized as an idgham reading. Therefore, it is also called idgham syamsiyah.

In the naming of syamsiyah also has an interesting analogy like qomariah. Syamsiah comes from the word “Syamsun”. The word syamsun means sun. That is why, the law of this reading is called alif lam syamsiyah.

So, alif lam is like a star, while the letters of the syamsiah are likened to the sun. Because, during the day, a star will be very difficult to see, even impossible to see, this is due to the bright light of the sun.

That is why, if you find a verse of the Qur’an with the law of alif lam syamsiyah, then the way to read the alif lam is to melt or not be read, but instead immediately enter the next hijaiyah letter.

Conclusion
