Looking for the best places to swim in Moscow? Check out our list of the top 30 swimming spots in the Russian capital for a refreshing and rejuvenating experience.A guide to the best beaches in Moscow in 2025. Where to swim, reviews and tips for relaxing on the water in the capital – in the Super article.
We’ve finally waited: the swimming season is starting in Moscow (although many open-air pools have already started accepting guests since June 1). As for natural bodies of water, you shouldn’t dive in head first and first study the list of places where Rospotrebnadzor has checked (water and sand too) and allowed swimming this year. It won’t take much time to get acquainted – there are only seven official beaches in Moscow in 2025.
Beaches in Moscow 2025
- Lake “Beloe” (Eastern Administrative District);
- Lake “Black” (ZelAO);
- School Lake (ZelAO);
- Troparevo (South-Western Administrative District);
- Meshcherskoye (ZAO);
- Serebryany Bor-2 (SZAO);
- Serebryany Bor-3 (SZAO).
Where you can’t swim
The answer to the question “Where is it forbidden to swim?” is quite simple – everywhere except the above-mentioned bodies of water. However, there are still a few points that are important to pay attention to:
- There is a sign saying “No swimming” near a body of water for a reason: sewage or industrial waste may be discharged into the water, which can cause, at a minimum, allergies or dermatitis;
- standing water, overgrown with mud, with ducks happily swimming there – another red flag, which signals that it is better not to swim here due to the risk of catching an infection.
What can you get infected with in polluted water bodies?
Swimming in unauthorized places is dangerous to your health: you won’t turn into a water spirit or a swamp kikimora, but it’s easy to catch some kind of infection. Rospotrebnadzor identifies the following as the most common (this is far from a complete list, but it still sounds impressive):
- Cercariosis (swimmer’s itch): the infection is carried by ducks infected with flatworm larvae. The good news is that these parasites do not live in humans. The bad news is that they can cause an allergic reaction on the skin. If you notice a rash on your body, consult a dermatologist;
- giardiasis: most often, giardia enters the body of children who often swallow water while swimming. Symptoms usually appear after 1-2 weeks: abdominal pain, nausea, loose stools – in this case, it is worth taking a test for giardia;
- rotavirus: high fever, diarrhea, vomiting may appear within a few hours. Treatment is symptomatic;
- leptospirosis (water fever): a life-threatening infection that is transmitted through animal feces. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, reddened whites of the eyes, rash, and jaundice. If you feel unwell, consult a doctor promptly.
Fines
Even if you are so fearless that you are not afraid of catching some infection, swimming in the wrong place can result in another punishment for you. According to the law, such actions are subject to a fine of up to 1,500 rubles (for entrepreneurs – up to 10,000 rubles).
You can also be fined in areas where swimming is permitted: for example, for illegal parking (3,000–4,500 rubles), for washing a car in a body of water (1,500–2,000 rubles), for illegal fishing (2,000–2,500 rubles). And, of course, for littering (2,000–5,000 rubles).
Outdoor swimming pools
A worthy alternative to natural reservoirs, especially since the water temperature in the pools is maintained at plus or minus 25 degrees. Visiting, however, is paid: it is worth signing up for a session in advance. The ticket price includes the use of a sun lounger, umbrella, changing room, shower, and storage room.
