In Gothic 1 Remake, lockpicking isn’t just an optional mechanic, but a full-fledged logic minigame. It can be confusing at first: lockpicks are scarce, skill is lacking, and any mistakes quickly lead to tool failure.
We’ll explore how a lock picking system works, where to find master keys, who to learn from, and how to open even the most complex locks without unnecessary losses.
How does lock picking work?
The lockpicking system in Gothic 1 Remake is based not on randomness, but on the logic of mechanical interaction. When attempting to open a chest or door, the player sees a structure made up of several plates. Inside each plate is a pin that must be moved to the fourth, central hole.
The main goal is to line up all the pins in the correct position without breaking the pick.
Important features of mechanics
- each plate has 7 positions;
- the correct point is always in the center (position 4);
- the movement of one plate can affect others;
- The reaction of the mechanism can be different: synchronous, opposite or absent.
Because of these connections, chaotic actions almost always lead to failure. If you mindlessly move the elements, the pick quickly breaks, and the lock must be rebuilt.
Why do master keys break?
Broken picks are the result of errors in the plate movement. This most often occurs when a player moves the pin beyond its extreme positions or makes rash movements.
Without skill upgrades, a lockpick can only withstand two errors. Therefore, it’s best to avoid difficult locks early in the game.
It is especially important to remember:
- the more complex the lock, the higher the risk of losing the master key;
- It’s worth saving before hacking;
- Every failure takes the process back to the beginning.
Where to find master keys
Lockpicks in Gothic 1 Remake can be obtained in several ways:
- exploration of camps, huts and abandoned buildings;
- search of chests and tables;
- loot from defeated enemies;
- purchase from merchants.
They are most often found among bandits, prisoners, and in places where the player is actively exploring the world.
Purchasing is also possible, but in the early stages this is a significant waste of ore, so it is better to combine trading with prospecting.
Where to learn lock picking
The hacking skill significantly simplifies the game and increases the number of permissible mistakes.
He is taught by Fingers, a character from the Old Camp who can be found near the arena. After progressing through the storyline and speaking with Diego, the player gains access to mentors, including Fingers.
He teaches not only hacking but also pickpocketing. Training requires skill points and ore.
Hacking skill levels
In Gothic 1 Remake, the hacking development system is divided into three levels:
Without training
- only 2 errors;
- Complex locks are almost impassable.
Trained hacking
- 10 training points and 100 ore;
- up to 4 errors;
- It is easier to control the connections between the plates.
Master of Hacking
- 20 training points and 200 ore;
- up to 6 errors;
- makes working with locks much easier.
If you plan to play through theft and exploration, leveling up your hacking skill quickly pays off—most chests contain valuable resources and weapons.
How to open a complex lock
Complex locks in Gothic 1 Remake require understanding of mechanics rather than guessing.
1. Analysis of the initial position
Each plate has 7 positions, numbered from 1 to 7, with the goal being to bring all the pins to position 4.
For example:
- P1 – 2
- P2 – 6
- P3 – 3
- P4 – 5
- P5 – 1
Each plate needs to be gradually aligned towards the center.
2. Checking the connections between the plates
Before solving the puzzle, it is useful to do a test:
- save the game;
- move each plate in turn;
- observe which elements react.
It is important to understand:
- does only the selected plate move;
- which plates move with it;
- Is there a reverse movement?
After this, the save can be loaded and the resulting “connection map” can be used.
3. First the difficult elements
Plates that influence several others are best processed first. They can ruin an already established combination if left until the end.
4. Don’t go to the extreme
The pin should not rest on positions 1 or 7. In such situations, it is easy to lose the pick.
If the move leads to the edge, it is better to first rebuild other elements.
5. Reset on error
If a lock has reached a dead end, it is sometimes more profitable to start over than to waste master keys on correcting the chaotic situation.
Helpful tips
- Always carry a supply of lock picks;
- save before difficult castles;
- Don’t try to get into difficult chests without skill;
- study the mechanics first, then act;
- Do not open chests in front of NPCs.
Is it worth opening all the chests?
No. Especially in the early stages of the game.
Some chests are visible to NPCs, and a failed attempt can lead to problems. Furthermore, some containers simply aren’t worth the cost of lockpicks. The optimal strategy is to level them up first, then systematically open them. There are also mods that completely disable lockpicking, such as Unlock all chests and doors (lockpick), which allows you to open locks without the minigame.
