What about remakes and remasters?
Let’s turn again to Dusk Golem, as it’s currently the most reliable source of information. According to them, Capcom plans to release a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica as early as 2027, and the fate of future projects will largely depend on their sales . Therefore, by this point, there are already plans for developing the RE universe, but these may be subject to revision.
For now, the company’s management is betting on Resident Evil remakes. After the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake, game director Yasuhiro Anpo stated that Capcom was pleased with the work done and the gamers’ reaction to its development. Even then, the company confirmed the imminent release of another remake. However, no official announcement has been made yet.
Capcom’s management no longer sees any point in new HD remasters, as they did with the very first game in the series in 2015. And it’s hard to argue with the company: even updated classics are now morally difficult to play—the core gameplay is long outdated, so such decisions risk only turning off newcomers to the entire franchise.
What remakes should we expect?
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
So, the first remake will apparently be Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Since the game is coming out relatively soon—in the first quarter of 2027—there’s more information about it than ever before.
According to leaks , the developers will significantly rework the core gameplay. The immediate targets are the remakes of RE2 and RE4. The main plot will be retained, but individual scenes and the overall narrative will also undergo change.
For example, in the original, Claire Redfield sneaked into the Umbrella office during a cutscene, leaving the player a passive observer. Rumor has it that in the remake, this segment will become a full-fledged stealth mission. It is known that the heroine will infiltrate the building with a tour group to retrieve classified information. However, it is possible that the basic gameplay for Claire will be borrowed from Grace in Requiem.
While in 2000’s Code Veronica, Claire and Chris’s stories were roughly equal in the overall plot, the new reimagining will place greater emphasis on Redfield’s beautiful sister. Her partner, Steve, will likely get a bit more screen time, too. Forums suggest his affection for Claire will remain intact.
But Chris won’t be relegated to the sidelines either. The battle between Chris and Albert Wesker won’t be limited to a single cutscene, but will instead become a full-blown combat that will truly challenge the player. Furthermore, Wesker himself will receive significantly more attention.
Old fans might not recognize the locations, however: the developers are planning to redesign the level structure. The main setting, Rockfort Island, will remain the same, but it will now become a semi-open world, which can be explored on your trusty motorcycle. Incidentally, something similar was discussed before the release of Requiem, but the entire journey was limited to one short episode. Perhaps the developers simply didn’t have time to refine this mechanic, and so decided to transfer it to Code Veronica? Who knows.
Rumors suggest players will experience a refined damage system, with every shot or hit reflecting on enemy models and behavior. All iconic locations and enemies will also remain. Incidentally, the game promises to be significantly darker, with a stronger horror element.
Resident Evil Zero
But Code Veronica isn’t the only Capcom remake the company’s developers are working on. A prequel to the series isn’t scheduled for release until 2028 , but some details are already known.
The main characters will remain medic Rebecca Chambers and ex-Marine Billy Coen. The core plot will remain intact, but certain elements will be significantly altered, such as the opening sequence on the train. New supporting characters will be introduced, and some existing ones will be given time to develop. In short, the overall direction of this remake is consistent with any other Resident Evil remake. And that’s a good thing.
Sources also revealed that one of the actors invited to work on Zero is John McClaren, who previously voiced Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He will likely voice Billy Cohen.
Another small detail: Beyond Capture Studios will be responsible for motion capture. This team worked with Capcom on Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6. However, it’s not yet known who will be handling the rest of the development.
Resident Evil 1
The remake of the first game in the series won’t be released until 2030 , so even less is known about it. Again, what little information there is comes from leaks by insider Dusk Golem.
According to him, the Spencer mansion from the original Resident Evil could have appeared in Requiem. This didn’t happen due to work on Code Veronica and Zero, which will also feature their own mansions. Furthermore, a similar location will also appear in the RE1 remake.
Previously, media outlets reported that the remake would improve gameplay mechanics, develop characters in greater detail, and expand the overall plot. However, all these statements are rather general and don’t provide any interesting details.
Moreover, Dusk Golem wrote that the project is in the very early stages of production, so it could be canceled altogether. The remake’s fate will likely depend directly on the sales of Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Resident Evil 5
Another game that franchise fans are eagerly awaiting. IGN even wrote a lengthy article about a possible Resident Evil 5 remake, in which the author pointed out several plot inconsistencies across various installments of the franchise. According to the publication’s journalist, all of these inconsistencies could be resolved with another remake.
