Altru Health System will shutter its home health service line effective Sept. 1. The health system attributed the closure to regulatory burdens, according to reports.

Grand Forks, North Dakota-based Altru Health System employs 3,100 health professionals and support staff and serves 230,000 residents across northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

“Patients who continue to qualify for home health services will receive assistance coordinating a transition to another Medicare-certified home health agency serving their area,” read a statement on Altru’s website. “Home-based outpatient therapy services through Regional Therapy Providers will continue in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.”

Ken Hanson, senior marketing and communications specialist at Altru, confirmed the closure to Fargo, North Dakota-based news outlet Valley News Live.

“Evolving regulatory standards have been a burden for this type of care, which has led to many home health agencies closing over the past few years,” Hanson reportedly told the outlet.

While Altru’s home health service line will close, the company will continue offering home-based therapy, remote monitoring and medical home visit programs, according to Valley News Live.

Altru Health System did not respond to Home Health Care News’ request for comment by the time of publication.

The closure comes amid a period of heightened federal oversight of the home health sector. In May, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) imposed a temporary national moratorium on Medicare home health enrollments. In April, federal agents suspended 23 home health agencies over fraud allegations. The regulatory landscape and enhanced oversight may also have slowed home health dealmaking.
