How to Catch Legendary Fish in Stardew Valley

how to catch legendary fish in Stardew Valley takes more than luck. It requires planning, the right gear, strong fishing skills, and a lot of patience. But once you land one, the reward is worth every second of effort. With the right conditions and a steady hand, you’ll soon be reeling in one of the game’s most exclusive treasures.Legendary fish are the pinnacle of angling skill in Stardew Valley . There are ten types of them in the game: five “original” ones, available from the start, and five “relatives” that appear through Mr. Qi’s “Extended Family” quest on Gingerbread Island.

You're trying to catch a legendary fish in this Stardew Valley of yours.

This guide is current for version 1.6.15 and covers all the nuances of catching each fish, equipment that truly saves time, and common mistakes made by beginners.

What exactly are legendary fish in Stardew Valley?

Legendary fish are unique loot that are tied to a specific location on the map and, for the “original five,” to strict conditions: season, weather, time of day, and minimum fishing skill level.Unlike regular fish, legendary fish can only be caught once per save, with the exception of special mechanics involving summoning bait and enchanted nets/fishing rods, which I’ll discuss below. During the fishing minigame, legendary fish are easily recognized by the orange crown displayed above their silhouette.

All legendary fish have some of the highest difficulty ratings in the game—ranging from 75 to 110 out of a maximum of 110—so even experienced players often lose their catch on the first few tries. This is normal: expect to spend anywhere from half an hour to several hours of gameplay on each fish, especially at first, until you’ve mastered fishing and acquired the right gear.

General preparation before hunting

Before you run to the water, it’s worth answering a few basic questions.

Fishing level

Catching a legendary fish requires a certain level of the Fishing skill, with the threshold varying for different fish—from level 3 (Angler) to level 10 (Legend). This skill level can be increased naturally or temporarily by using food buffs, such as Trout Soup or “Treat Yourself”—any food with a fishing bonus.

Equipment

  • An iridium fishing rod is the bare minimum. It allows you to use bait and tackle simultaneously, which is crucial for challenging catches.
  • The Advanced Iridium Fishing Rod is new in Update 1.6. It provides two equipment slots at once, with their effects cumulative. It’s the ultimate tool for hunting legendary fish in 2026.
  • The Float Trap slows down the speed at which fish “escape” the green zone of the minigame. Recommended for beginners.
  • Cork float – increases the size of the green bar and speeds up rod response; suitable for players who already understand fish behavior patterns.
  • The sonar float is another new feature in 1.6. It allows you to see exactly what fish has bitten before the minigame starts, and cancel your cast if it’s not the species you’re looking for. It’s extremely useful during the “Extended Family” quest, where both common and legendary fish can bite at the same time.
  • Mayor Lewis’s Lucky Purple Shorts , when equipped with an Improved Iridium Rod in their first slot, retain the durability of the second attachment—handy if you use consumable attachments like the Bobber Trap or Cork Bobber on a regular basis.
  • The Curiosity Lure bait doubles the Legend’s bite chance (from 10% to 20% per cast) and is generally useful for all stubborn Legendary fish.
  • Magic bait allows you to catch fish regardless of season or weather—for example, you can use it to catch a Legend on a sunny winter day.

How to recognize a legendary fish?

When casting, the silhouette of the legendary fish in the minigame is always topped with an orange crown. If you use the Sonar Float, the fish type is displayed even before the minigame starts—saving a ton of time and frustration.

The Original Five Legendary Fish.

Legendary fish in Stardew Valley

These five fish can only be caught once per save (or once per player in multiplayer). They are required for the “Master Angler” achievement and for completing the “Fish Tank” set in the Workshop.

Legend

  • Location: Mountain Lake (behind Clint’s Forge);
  • Season: spring only;
  • Weather: only rain;
  • Time: any time of the day;
  • Required fishing level: 10;
  • Difficulty: 110 (maximum in the game);
  • Special requirement: the float must be at least 4 tiles away from any land, including bridges. If the cast hits bubbles, this distance can be reduced to 3 tiles. The classic casting spot is near the submerged log in the southeastern part of the lake;
  • Catch chance: about 10% for a good cast, increases to 20% with the Curiosity Bait bait.

The Legend is the most difficult and rare fish of the original five, and that’s no exaggeration: a difficulty of 110 means the minigame’s green bar will move extremely sharply and unpredictably. Don’t be discouraged if the fish escapes the hook several times in a row—this is common even for experienced players. It’s recommended to come with a full energy reserve and some trout soup prepared in advance.

An important detail for 2026: starting with patch 1.6, it’s no longer possible to accidentally hook a Legend with a training rod—previously, this was a known bug. Also, starting with version 1.6, you can catch multiple Legends in a single save file using Challenge Bait or the Fisher enchantment on your panning rod, if you haven’t already caught one the normal way. That’s what makes springtime challenging.

Fire bass

  • Location: beach, east pier next to Elliot’s house;
  • Season: summer fish;
  • Weather: any;
  • Time: from 6:00 to 20:00 (according to some sources – until 22:00, but it is safer to focus on daytime hours);
  • Required fishing level: 5;
  • Difficulty: 95;

Cast your line as far out to sea as possible—Fire bass prefer deep water with a high “fishing zone” rating (fishing zone 3 or higher). Position your line right on the pier or on the sandy shore to the right of it.

Anglerfish

  • Location: River in Pelican Town, north of Joja’s shop, next to the wooden bridge;
  • Season: autumn only;
  • Weather: any;
  • Time: unlimited;
  • Required fishing level: 3;
  • Difficulty: 85.

The Anglerfish is considered the most accessible of the five legendary fishes—its minimal level requirement and relatively calm demeanor in the minigame make it an excellent starting target for newcomers just learning how to hunt legendary fish.

Ice fish

  • Location: Cindersap, a small arrowhead shaped island in the southern part of the forest, found in deep (dark blue) water;
  • Season: winter only;
  • Weather: clear, no snowfall, according to some sources any weather is acceptable, but it is safer to fish in clear weather;
  • Time: from 6:00 to 20:00;
  • Required fishing level: 6;
  • Difficulty: 100.

Icefish are aggressive—they make long, sharp jerks, which often causes the fish to break away on the first try, even with an iridium rod and a float trap. Cast as far from the shore as possible to reach the deep water zone.

Mutant carp

  • Location: sewer under Pelican Town;
  • Access: The sewers are unlocked after donating at least 60 items to Gunther’s Museum and receiving the Rusty Key;
  • Season: any;
  • Weather: any;
  • Time: unlimited;
  • Required fishing level: not required;
  • Difficulty: 80.

Technically, the Mutant Carp is the most “soft” legendary fish in terms of requirements: there are no seasonal or time restrictions, the only obstacle being access to a sewer. There is no designated casting point inside the sewer, so you can fish anywhere in the body of water.

The Extended Family Quest and the Second Five

After you unlock Ginger Island and visit the Walnut Room, Mr. Qi will periodically offer the rotating quest “Extended Family.” Its description states that “the relatives of the legendary fish have returned,” and you have three in-game days to catch all the “descendants”:

  • Son of Fire Bass – same spot as Fire Bass (east pier near Elliot’s house);
  • Mrs. Angler – the same bridge north of Jodzha;
  • Legend II – the same mountain lake, the same area near the log;
  • Icefish Jr. – same island in Cindersap;
  • Radioactive carp is the same sewer.

Every catch in Stardy Valley, literally every fish

The main difference between the second five and the original is that season—spring or fall—weather, and time of day no longer matter. The only hard restrictions are the three-day quest timer and a minimum fishing level, which is still required. The most challenging “descendants,” like the originals, require a high level.

The reward for completing the quest is 20 Chi Gems, which can be spent in the Walnut Room on exclusive items.

Important: fish from the “Extended Family” can be caught multiple times during a single quest run—unlike the original five, there’s no “once per save” limit, so you can catch a “souvenir” supply if you want.

Tactics for a three-day quest

  1. Prepare your route in advance: since season and weather are no longer important, the biggest bottleneck is simply the travel time between four points on the mainland and one point in the sewers. Plan your route so you don’t have to run back and forth.
  2. Use the Sonar Float: This new feature in version 1.6 allows you to see the type of fish that has bitten before the mini-game starts, eliminating the need to waste time on common fish in the same body of water.
  3. Enhanced Iridium Rod + Double Rig: Use both the Trap Float (or Cork Float) and the Sonar Float – their effects are cumulative, giving you maximum bang for your buck in a single cast.
  4. Come with a full energy bar and a couple of servings of food with a fishing buff, because three days is not that long if you’re also farming.

Legendary caviar and fish pond

Starting with patch 1.6.9, legendary fish can be placed in Robin’s Fish Pond. Important details:

  • The pond capacity for a legendary fish is always limited to 1 fish, and this number cannot be increased.
  • A Legendary Fish Pond produces only Legendary Caviar, such as Green Caviar from a Legend, and no other byproducts.
  • Patch 1.6.13 temporarily reduced the chance of getting caviar, but in 1.6.15 the developers returned to a more generous chance and increased the average daily value of the product, so in 2026, keeping legendary fish in the pond is again profitable.
  • Caviar can be turned into aged caviar through a barrel of brine, which significantly increases the selling price—taking into account the artisan bonus (+40%), the profit is significantly higher than the base price of the fish itself.
  • Please note: if you want to keep fish in your pond as a “working specimen” and not just store the trophy in the refrigerator, even if the fish is smoked, remember that adding it to the pond does not change the fact that you have already caught it – it is purely a decorative and economic mechanism for income.

It’s also worth remembering the book “Jewels of the Sea” – as of patch 1.6, it unlocks the power to obtain Legendary Caviar in additional ways, in addition to the standard pond.

How to play the mini-game: practical tips

The fishing minigame for Legendary fish is always more challenging than the standard one due to its high difficulty. Here are some practical tips:

  • Don’t panic at the first failure: even with perfect gear, the chance of losing a fish on the first or second try is high – the difficulty of legendary fish ranges from 75 to 110, with a maximum of 110.
  • Keep the green stripe slightly above the center of the fish , rather than right next to it – this will compensate for sudden jerks.
  • The float trap is more effective than the Cork float for beginners because it physically slows down the rate at which the fish “escape” the zone, whereas the Cork float requires a good reading of behavior patterns.
  • Take a fishing buff before every serious attempt —even +1 to your fishing level significantly reduces the variability of your streak.
  • Don’t enter the water with a full fatigue bar – exhaustion or low energy negatively affects concentration.

Common mistakes beginners make

  1. Fishing in the wrong spot on the water: This happens especially often with the Legend—if you’re standing too close to the shore or bridge, the fish physically can’t appear in the catch, no matter how much you cast.
  2. Ignoring Weather and Season in the Original Five: Unlike the Extended Family, the Original Five fish have strict conditions: the wrong season or weather and the fish simply won’t show up.
  3. Trying to catch a legendary fish without an Iridium Rod: Without a second tackle slot, your chances of keeping the fish in the minigame drop dramatically.
  4. Missing Sewer Key: Many people forget that in order to find the Mutant Carp and Radioactive Carp, you must first donate 60 items to the museum and get the Rusty Key from Gunther.
  5. Rushing during the “Extended Family” quest: Three days sounds like a long time, but if you’re running around without a clear route, time flies by quickly—especially considering the commute to and from Gingerbread Island. It’s best not to do that.

Important: Understand the difference between legendary fish and common ones. Albacore, rainbow trout, lobster, sardine, flounder, bream, tilapia, catfish, herring, pike, sea cucumber (emae), chub, dorado, anchovy, goby, mussel, lobster, smallmouth bass, shrimp, shad, pufferfish, rockfish (what?), and even the Stardew Valley lava eel are not considered legendary or rare.

But if you still want to understand how to find bream, tilapia, carp, pufferfish, rainbow trout, lava eel, pike, sardine, sardine, and other underwater creatures, read our other detailed guide .

Legendary Fish in Stardew Valley remains one of the game’s most demanding, yet also most atmospheric, challenges. The original five tests your patience and map knowledge, while Mr. Qi’s “Extended Family” adds a time-management element and turns the hunt into a dynamic race across the valley.

With update 1.6, the developers have significantly simplified the process with the Sonar Float, an improved Iridium Rod, and improved Fish Pond mechanics—so in 2026, catching all the Legendary Fish and establishing a stable income from Legendary Caviar is easier than ever. Wishing you a bountiful catch and a fish collection that will grace your home!
