Let’s stretch our legs and arms and learn to swim! In GTA 5 and GTA 5 RPG , of course. In GTA 5, water is more than just an environmental element. Beneath its surface, you can find sunken planes, ships, cash stashes, collectibles, and even complete some missions. To freely explore the Los Santos ocean, it’s important to know how to swim properly and control your character underwater.
In this guide, we’ll cover how to swim and dive in GTA 5 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. I’ll also tell you how to stay underwater longer, so get comfortable and learn some new skills.
How to Swim in GTA 5.

Believe it or not, it’s actually easy… Just go into deep enough water and, if the distance to the bottom is sufficient, your character will automatically switch to swimming mode.Important: diving in pools or shallow water isn’t always possible—submersion requires sufficient depth. It’s impossible to even take a proper dip, let alone surface.

After diving, the controls are inverted, which leaves many wondering how to swim and, more importantly, how to surface in GTA 5. Below, I’ve listed which button to press where.
- W — go deeper;
- S — to emerge, to rise to the surface, to swim upward;
- Shift – swim forward faster;
- The mouse is responsible for the direction of gaze and movement.
Controls on PlayStation
The standard controls on PlayStation are as follows (suitable for PS4 and PS5):
- Left stick – movement;
- X – swim fast;
- R1 – dive;
- Right stick – camera control.
Underwater, the direction of movement also depends on the position of the camera.
Controls on Xbox
The default controls are as follows:
- Left stick – movement;
- A — acceleration;
- RB — to dive;
- Right stick – camera.
How to stay underwater longer?
While submerged, an oxygen bar appears beneath your health and armor bars. When it’s depleted, your character begins to lose health and eventually drowns. To maximize your time in the water, do the following:
- Dive regularly to gradually increase your character’s lung capacity;
- Use scuba gear during some missions or in GTA Online;
- Surface in time to fully restore your oxygen supply
What can you find underwater?
Ocean exploration is both fun and profitable. Underwater, you’ll find:
- Sunken planes and ships;
- Hidden collectibles;
- Briefcases and hiding places;
- Details for completing some tasks and tests.
Most of the interesting places are located far from the shore, so for long dives it is better to use a boat, jet ski or underwater vehicle.
Why doesn’t the character dive?
If the dive button does not work, there may be several reasons:
- The character is located near the shore or in a shallow pool;
- The controls have been reassigned in the settings.
On a PC, you can check the key assignments in the “Settings” section, and then in “Controls”.
Swimming in GTA 5 is fairly simple, but underwater controls are different. On PC, for example, familiar keys work in reverse after diving. This can be frustrating, as you might not understand the mechanics. Once you master these features and manage your oxygen levels, you’ll be able to explore the seabed, find secrets, and complete underwater missions without any problems.
