Considerations when taking a climogram

A climogram is a graph that allows us to better observe the different data related to the climate of a locality. The base design to make a climate chart is defined, being able to only add details to give it our personal touch.

As such, the mean temperature and precipitation data for each month of the year are represented simultaneously . For the first data it is represented with a continuous line while for the second vertical bars are used.

It is important to emphasize that to make a climogram with all of the law we must use data collected over a period of 20 to 30 years. However, in this case we will use the information we have at our disposal.

The axes of the graph will be such that the horizontal axis will have every month, from January to December. While the vertical axis will be double: one axis for rainfall and another for temperatures .

For the scale of the vertical axes, in the case of monthly average rainfall, these will be measured in millimeters, being 10 mm. On the other hand, for the axis of the monthly average temperatures a scale of 5 degrees will be used.

How to make a climogram in Excel?

Before starting, it is important to have at hand the table of measurements that you want to enter in the graph . That is why we will have to have the information related to the temperature and average precipitation of a specific place in the course of the year that we want. All this data can be obtained directly from reliable sources such as meteorological centers or universities.

  • We will start Excel and create a new blank workbook.
  • The next thing will be to transcribe the data to the spreadsheet, taking care not to make mistakes.
  • Next, we will create a new line chart. For this we will go to “Graphics”in the “Insert” . A white box will be generated that we can place wherever we want.
  • Then, we will have to right click on the box and then select “Select data”.
  • We will see a pop-up window, where we will have to click on “Add”. At this point we will have to select the data to enter in the graph. We can select them directly from the table we made earlier.
  • We will change the values from “= {1}”to those that interest us, which can be temperature or precipitation. We will press “Accept” .
  • We will repeat the last 3 steps to add the missing data.
  • We will see in the right column the numbers from 1 to 12 that we will have to replace with the months of the year. We will only have to click on “Edit”and we will select them from the first row.
  • We press “Accept”.

At this point, we should have a graph with two solid lines . However, we will have to place the rainfall data in vertical bars. In addition to formatting the scales of the vertical axes. Here’s how to do this:

  • We will right click on the line that represents the precipitation data to select “Change type of series graph”.
  • In the menu we will have to select the series “Precipitations”to place it in “Grouped columns” . We can do this in the sub menu that we will find next to it.
  • We press “Accept”.

To almost finish our climate chart, we will have to give the correct scale to each vertical axis because Excel places one by default. To change this, we will press the right button on the temperature line and click on “Format data series” . A side panel will appear where we can edit the scale of the axes.

We will do the same with the precipitation data . Likewise, in the same menu we will format the axis scales, placing those that we established previously or those that seem best to you.

It is easy to make a climate chart, being able to create custom buttons to make it easier and faster. Similarly, in Excel it is possible to make a family tree or create a calendar for appointments and notes , confirming its versatility .
