You received an Amazon Echo speaker as a gift and, without a moment’s hesitation, you turned it on to immediately use the Alexa voice assistant. After a few moments, however, Alexa herself asked you to carry out the first configuration of the speaker: not having the faintest idea of how to proceed, you opened Google in search of information in this sense and you ended up here, among the pages of my site.
If this is the case, know that you are in the right place, at the right time! With this tutorial, in fact, I will explain how to configure Alexa on the speakers of the Amazon Echo line, both those without an LCD screen and those that do. For completeness of information, then, I will provide you with a series of “tips” aimed at configuring the Amazon voice assistant on non-Echo Bluetooth speakers.

Before even getting to the heart of this guide and explaining to you, concretely, how to configure Alexa , it is good to clarify a fundamental aspect of the matter: to take advantage of the features of the Amazon Echo devices (which, I remind you, can also be used as “simple” Bluetooth speakers), it is essential to have an Amazon account to match it. If you don’t have one yet, you can create it quickly, and absolutely free, by following the instructions I gave you in my dedicated tutorial .

How to set up Alexa Echo
To put your new Amazon Echo device into operation, regardless of the type you have, you must first connect it to the power supply and wait for the operating system to start up, until Alexa’s voice will ask you to configure it via the app ( on devices without a display), or until you see the language selection screen appear on the speaker screen (on devices with a display). For details on how to configure Alexa Echo , continue reading, everything is explained below.
Echo without display
First, let’s find out how to set up Alexa on non-display Echo devices . So, download the Amazon Alexa app to your smartphone or tablet . To do this, proceed as follows: if you are using Android , access the relevant section of the Play Store and press the Install button (or you can go to alternative stores ); if you are using iOS/iPadOS , access the relevant section of the App Store , press the Get button , then the Install button and authorize the download using Face ID , Touch ID orApple ID password .
Now, start the app by touching the icon that has been added to the home screen and, on the screen of the same that is shown to you, enter the credentials of your Amazon account in the appropriate form, then touch the Login button to carry out the login and, when prompted, tap the Continue button to accept the terms of use of the service.
Once this step has also been completed, touch the Yes button , to express your willingness to configure a new device, select the Amazon Echo model in your possession (e.g. if you want to configure Alexa Echo Dot you must select the Echo , Echo Dot , Echo Plus and others ), specify, if requested, the exact version of the speaker you have (e.g. 3rd generation Echo Dot ) and wait for the light ring located on the Echo device to turn orange .
When this happens, tap the Yes button , tap the Allow button to allow Alexa to be able to access your location (or the No button if you don’t want this to happen) and then wait for the Echo speaker to automatically detected by the app.
Now, tap on the name of the device in question and, using the next screen, configure Alexa with Wi-Fi by selecting the Wi-Fi network to which you intend to connect the Amazon Echo (you can also configure Alexa with hotspot ) and, if necessary, also enter the access key .
After this step, choose whether to connect the Echo to a Bluetooth speaker , to a speaker via AUX cable or whether to use the Echo’s built-in speaker and, after making a decision, select your name on the next screen and check that the your personal data (name and surname) are correct, otherwise you can modify them.
When you’re done, press the Continue button and provide the necessary permissions to access the contacts and notifications of the device you’re using: tap the Allow button and, when prompted , respond affirmatively to the Android and iOS/iPadOS alerts regarding the aforementioned permissions .
As a last step, you may be asked to enter your mobile phone number in the field displayed on the screen. In this case, tap the Continue button and enter the verification code you should have received via SMS in the text area that appears .
Alexa setup is finally done! At this point, all you have to do is press the Next button several times to start using Alexa: to view a list of the most popular commands, tap the button to experiment with things to try , while if you already know how to use Alexa’s voice assistant Amazon press the button to go to the home screen and complete the configuration phase.
I remind you that, to wake up the voice assistant, each command must be preceded by the name “Alexa” . When the device is listening, you will receive video feedback from the light ring on the front of the speaker.
For your information, I inform you that you can expand the functionality of Amazon Echo devices by installing specific skills : these are, in concrete terms, some add-ons, capable of providing Echo products with access to a wide range of apps, games and third-party services, integrating an infinite number of new functions (and new voice commands).
To install a skill, start the Alexa app on your device, tap the More button located at the bottom right and press the Skills and games button located on the screen that appears.
Now you can choose to view the skills suggested by Amazon, by tapping the Things to try tab at the top, choose them by category, by popularity, etc. by accessing the Skills and Games tab or performing a direct search by tapping the magnifying glass icon at the top right and typing its name in the text field that appears.
Once you have identified the skill you are interested in, tap its name and tap the Enable for use button to install it on your account. Within a few seconds, it will be active on the previously configured Amazon Echo device (and possibly on all other devices combined with the same account). Subsequently, you can “invoke” the skill simply by reciting the voice commands indicated in the Start saying box .
If you change your mind, you can deactivate the previously activated skills by going again to the Skills and games area of the Amazon Alexa app, accessing the Your Skills tab located at the top and, after touching the name of the reference add-on, touch the Deactivate Skill and Deactivate buttons .
Echo with display
If, on the other hand, you have an Echo with a display , you can easily carry out the initial configuration of the device via the integrated LCD screen.
Then, after connecting the Echo to the power supply, wait for the main menu to appear and select the language to use, presumably Italian .
Then, select the Wi-Fi network to which you want to connect the device, type the access key using the keyboard shown on the screen, and touch the arrow button to go to the next stage, during which you will have to log in to your Amazon account and confirm that you really are the person to whom it is associated, indicating, when possibly requested, the telephone number and the confirmation code received via SMS.
Once the verification procedure is complete, configure your time zone , assign a name to the Echo, specify whether to download and install updates , if available, and you’re done! After that, you can start interacting with Alexa using voice commands right away.
Again, remember to prepend the word “Alexa” to any command you intend to issue, to ensure that the device enters listening mode. When this happens, the light bar on the front of the Echo should light up.
Keep in mind that once the configuration phase is complete, your Amazon Echo with display will automatically appear in the Amazon Alexa app. To view the list of the most useful actions, after starting the aforementioned app, tap the More button located at the bottom right and select the item Things to try from the menu that is offered to you.
How to set up Alexa without app
If you don’t have a smartphone or tablet at your disposal, I inform you that you can configure Alexa without an app , acting as a computer.
To do this, you must first start the browser you usually use to browse the Internet from a PC (eg Chrome ), visit this website and log into your Amazon account .
Once the main screen is visible, select the Smart Home item from the left side menu, press the Find button located at the bottom and wait for new devices to be identified, then select the Echo from the list.
At this point, click on the Continue button , check that the light ring or light bar on the device is orange , press the Continue button again and, using your operating system menu, connect to the Wi-Fi network .
Once this is done, go back to the browser screen, click on the Continue button and choose the Wi-Fi network to connect the device to (presumably the home one), entering the relative access key when prompted .
At this point, you just have to continue the configuration as I showed you previously: click on the Continue button , specify whether to connect your Echo to a Bluetooth speaker, a speaker via AUX cable or whether to use the internal speaker, make sure the your name and surname are correct and, to conclude the configuration phase, if requested, confirm your identity by entering your telephone number and the verification code received via SMS in the appropriate fields.
How to set up Alexa on non-Echo devices
Although the Alexa voice assistant was designed to be used through Amazon Echo devices or through the Amazon Alexa app, there are Bluetooth speakers from other brands, which can be interfaced with the Amazon API, making it possible to use the Alexa functionality.

In this case, the initial configuration of the device (which still requires access to the Amazon account) must be done through the official app distributed with the cash register in question. In this case, all you have to do is pair the app to the cash register using the procedure provided by the manufacturer (usually illustrated in the speaker’s user manual), access the app’s main menu and select the item to add a new service /add new service .
