Blocking a site via a router.

The most obvious thing is to use your own router settings. To block a site through it, you need to:

  • Enter the router settings by entering the IP address in the browser address bar (usually 168.0.1or 192.168.1.1 );
  • Find the section responsible for managing network access or content filtering. It may have different names, such as “Parental Controls”or “Access Control” . In our case, it is “Firewall” ;
  • Find the tab ” Blacklist”or ” Blocked Sites” and add the addresses of the sites you want to block. In our case, it is called “URL Filter” ;
  • Save the settings and reboot the router.

Now the sites added to the blacklist will be blocked for all devices connected to the router. To unblock a URL, simply remove it from the blacklist.

Blocking a site via the Hosts file

Another way is to block web resources via a local IP address database. To do this, we need to:

  • Log in to Windows as an administrator;
  • Go to the folder “%Windir%System32driversetc” and find a file without an extension named “Hosts” ;
  • Now you need to open it in Notepad or a similar program;
  • Next, you need to add a new line anywhere in the file and enter “127.0.0.1 URL”with the name of the resource to be blocked instead of “URL” ;
  • Save the file. To prevent Notepadfrom adding the .txt extension, type the name “hosts” in quotes and select “all files” in the file type.

After this, the site will no longer open in browsers, since the computer will search for it on the local device, and not on the Internet.

Blocking a website through Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall can also block websites by IP address. Before you block a website, you need to know its IP address. This can be done using the command ” ping_URL “ .

  • Open Command Prompt in Windows;
  • Click the Startbutton and type “cmd” in the search bar, then select “Run as administrator” ;
  • Enter the command “ping URL”. For example, “ping vk.com” ;
  • Open Windows Firewall: Click the Start button and type Firewall in the search bar, then select Windows Firewalland then Advanced settings in the left pane;
  • Left click on “Outbound Rules” in the left menu and select “Create Rule”;
  • Select Custom settingsand click Next . Select All programs and click Next again ;
  • Select the desired IP addresses” in the ” Specify the remote IP addresses to which this rule applies”section ;
  • Click Addand enter the IP addresses you want to block. Then click OK ;
  • Select the option ” Block the connection”and click ” Next” ;
  • In the Profilewindow , check all the items to which the rule will apply and click Next ;
  • Add a name or description for this rule and click Done.

Now blocked IP addresses will be impossible to open in any browser.
