Headphones can be updated without user intervention. But there is a procedure that speeds up the receipt of a new version of the software.Apple has for the first time openly explained how to properly install new software versions on AirPods of all generations. Installation instructions appeared on the official Apple technical support website.

AirPods usually do not require any intervention in their work, except for periodic recharging. Many users do not even know that their headphones receive updates and install updates during inactivity. These updates are necessary for stable operation of the headsets, fast connection, compatibility with the latest versions of iOS, macOS, etc., as well as to ensure security and privacy.

  • Remove the earbuds from the case or smart cover (for AirPods Max) and connect them to your iPhone;
  • In the Settings app, at the top, tap the name of your headphone model;
  • Scroll down to “About device”;
  • Click the Version tab.

You will see two items: “Version” and “Case”. The first one shows the current software version for the headsets themselves, the second one – for the charging case. In the case of AirPods Max, only the version of the headphones themselves will be displayed. A list of current software versions for any AirPods is available on the Apple website .

This procedure will come in handy if you suddenly discover that your headphones have not been updated for a long time or do not work correctly with other Apple devices.

For AirPods or AirPods Pro

  1. Make sure your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, which is connected to the same Wi-Fi hotspot;
  2. Place your AirPods in the charging case and close the lid;
  3. Put the headphones on charge;
  4. Keep the charging case lid closed and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to be updated;
  5. Open the charging case lid to reconnect AirPods to iPhone;
  6. Check the firmware version in the settings again.

If that doesn’t work, reset your AirPods and then try updating the firmware again.

For AirPods Max

  1. Make sure your AirPods Max are within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, which is connected to the same Wi-Fi hotspot;
  2. Place your AirPods Max in the smart case and charge the earphones;
  3. Please wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update;
  4. Reconnect your AirPods Max to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac;
  5. Please check your firmware version again.

If that doesn’t work, reset your AirPods Max and then try updating the firmware again.
