Microsoft Flight Simulator, guide and user manual: how to play, tricks and tutorials

14 years have passed since the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator X to be able to enjoy a new installment, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) . The leap at the graphic level has been abysmal, this new installment has very realistic graphics . In addition, at the gameplay level there are also changes . Let’s say that the developers of the game, Asobo Studio, have done everything possible to bring the game closer to all types of players.

Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) is not just another flight simulator . Asobo Studio has done a great job in every way. For starters, those players who have never touched a flight simulator have at their disposal a very complete tutorial where they will learn to fly an airplane. Like all games of the genre, his is to play with a joystick and a lever as an accelerator. However, it can be played perfectly with a controller , keyboard and mouse. Now, the experience is not the same.

If you are new to Microsoft Flight Simulator, you may not be very clear on where to start. In case you are interested in the game, did you know that it is not exclusive to the Microsoft Store? Then there is the topic of system requirements. Microsoft’s flight simulator is somewhat demanding. It is very important to take a look at the minimum requirements to see if your PC measures up or falls short. Finally, it should be mentioned that the game has a fairly high learning curve. With that said, whether you are a newbie or a seasoned gamer, this complete Microsoft Flight Simulator guide is made for you. You will find all kinds of guides with specific information about specific things in the game.

How to record your flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator

If you have a YouTube channel and you play Microsoft Flight Simulator, you still plan to upload some gameplay. It may also be that you simply want to record a gameplay and then edit it to add music and effects. Well, in Windows 10 you don’t need to install any software to capture the screen.

Microsoft Flight Simulator requires Windows 10 to work, so you only have to activate a feature that is available in Windows Settings . Once activated, you can record gameplays by accessing the Xbox Game Bar or by using a keyboard shortcut. Let’s see how you can record a Microsoft Flight Simulator gameplay or another game.

How to record your flight

To record while playing the game, first of all is to activate the Xbox Game Bar. Press the Win + I keys to open the Windows 10 settings panel. Then, click on Games . Okay, now you just have to enable Xbox Game Bar.

To record video you have to activate Xbox Game Bar

By default the videos are recorded at 30 fps and in medium quality. This you can easily change . You have to click on Captures . In Captures you can enable / disable audio recording during a game, change the audio quality –up to 192 KB / s–, choose the video quality and increase the frame rate to 60 fps while recording.

Before recording it is important to choose the video and audio quality

Now that you have everything related to video capture configured, it is time to record your flight. You just have to open Microsoft Flight Simulator. When you want to record a video simply you have to press the Win + Alt + R keys . To stop recording you have to press the same keyboard shortcut. This can also be done by pressing the Win + G keys. By doing this you will see in the upper left part of the screen a floating window with a button to start recording.

If you press the Win + G keys, you open Xbox Game Bar and access the Capture panel

Recording a video while playing is resource consuming, this is something to consider. If your PC is short of hardware to move Microsoft Flight Simulator, when recording a gameplay the frame rate will drop. This can make it unplayable . If this is your case, I recommend you capture video at 30 fps and lower the quality to medium.

Microsoft Flight Simulator: all keyboard shortcuts

Microsoft Flight Simulator is not a game for everyone , especially because of the hours it takes to learn to play and also because of the learning curve. Also, although you can play with a controller, keyboard and mouse, your thing is to have a joystick and other peripherals in order to simulate the cockpit of an airplane.

Microsoft’s flight simulator is available on Xbox Game Pass , so if you are subscribed you can give it a try. Of course, I recommend you do the tutorial to learn the most basic. Starting from scratch without doing the tutorial can leave you frustrated. If you play with keyboard and mouse, the list of shortcuts is endless. However, in the game settings you can have it tell you at any time which keys to press to do X action. Okay, let’s go over all the keyboard shortcuts.

Keyboard shortcuts

Although we could say that you can do everything from the instrument panel of the plane, with the keyboard shortcuts everything is faster . Remember that from the game settings you can see all the game controls and modify them to your liking.

  • How to fix the “Please wait … 3.68 GB remaining” error in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Installing Microsoft Flight Simulator takes time regardless of your Internet connection. Also, if you install it on a hard drive it takes much longer. In this sense, it is highly recommended to install the game on an SSD . As if that weren’t enough, it doesn’t just download and install the necessary files. In the middle of the process it unzips them. Ultimately, the installation process can end the patience of more than one.

Installation can get complicated during download when there is 3.68 GB left to download. Turns out that in some cases it keeps decompressing certain files and never finishes . We assume that Microsoft will fix the bug with an update. In the meantime, it’s possible to fix this bug using a method posted by a Reddit member calling himself phire .

Fixing the error

Well, if trying to install the game the installation stays at, “Please wait … 3.68 GB remaining” , you can try the following. What the method you will see below does is delete a series of files. These files are those that your computer tries to unzip without success , preventing the installation from progressing.

Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) requires 150 GB free

  • You have to close the Microsoft Flight Simulator installer.
  • Open the file explorer and go to the folder: C: Users USERNAME AppData Local Packages Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe LocalCache Packages Official OneStore–if you bought the game from Microsoft Store–. By the way, turn on hidden items to see all folders . In the file explorer you have to click on View and you will see that there is an unchecked box that says, Hidden elements .
  • Delete all the files fs-base-cgl-0.1.21.fspackage.NNN and fs-base-cgl-0.1.21.fspatch.
  • Open Microsoft Flight Simulator againand the installer will redownload the files you just deleted. In the beginning, when it comes time to unzip these files, everything should be fine.

The installer appears to hang when trying to unzip the fs-base-cgl. This file is about 56 GB in size and divided into 2 GB chunks . However, at no time does a warning appear saying that the installer is blocked.

How to activate the autopilot in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator is much more than piloting an airplane , it is also enjoying views that on more than one occasion will leave us with our mouths open. The leap in graphic quality with respect to Flight Simulator X is abysmal. It is also true that between the two games 14 years have passed. In all this time the hardware and the graphics engines have improved by leaps and bounds.

If when you are at the controls of a plane you prefer to enjoy the views and completely forget about piloting the aircraft, then you just have to activate the automatic pilot . You can then switch between the outer and inner camera to change the point of view. You have total freedom to move the camera, you simply have to move the mouse while keeping the right button pressed. Not sure how to activate the autopilot? Do not worry, it is very easy. Now I explain how it is done.

How to activate the autopilot

Before explaining how to activate the autopilot there is something you should know. This function can be activated and deactivated at any time . It does not matter if you are in mid-flight or standing on the airport runway waiting for the signal to start take off.

From the keyboard shortcuts you can also activate / deactivate the autopilot

Once on the plane you have to move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen to access the menu. A menu consisting of 12 icons will automatically be displayed. Well, you have to click on the AI Control icon – fifth icon from the left. You’ll see three options come up: checklist assistance, managing radio communications, and controlling aircraft. Here it is enough to activate the last option, control aircraft . However, I recommend activating all three, so you also forget about everything related to radio communications and verifications.

How to fly to an exact point on the planet in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Flying over any point on the planet is very easy in Microsoft Flight Simulator . Thanks to the Microsoft flight simulator and Bing Maps it is possible to visit any point of interest in a few minutes . We could say that it would be something like a virtual trip. Also, if you don’t fly the plane very well for now, nothing happens, you can always activate the autopilot .

Seeing the Statue of Liberty from the sky or taking a tour of Mount Everest is two mouse clicks away. Of course, you need an external tool to know the coordinates , otherwise you can forget. However, it is very easy to get the coordinates of any place. That said, we are going to see step by step how to fly to any point of interest.

How to fly to an exact point on the planet

To start with, the most important thing is to know what place you want to fly over and know the coordinates. Well, you have to open Bing Maps from the web browser . Then, in the search bar you enter the point of interest . Once the point of interest is marked on the map, you have to click with the right mouse button. At the bottom of the floating window you will see the coordinates. Click Copy . You can now close the browser.

Knowing the coordinates of a place is very easy with Bing Maps

Now that you have the coordinates, you have to run the game, as long as you don’t have it open in the background. Once on the main screen of Microsoft Flight Simulator, access the World Map –free flight– . In the search bar on the left, press the Ctrl + V keys to paste the coordinates . Finally, set the point of interest as arrival, choose the closest airport and click the fly button. Enjoy the views!

The coordinates are pasted into the search bar

We remind you that you can activate the autopilot at any time from the menu that appears at the top of the screen. From this menu you have to access the AI Control settings and activate the Control aircraft option . To switch between modes Vista cabin and External must press End .

How to see animals while flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft Flight Simulator will never cease to amaze us with everything it offers. Not only can you see your house from the sky , it is also possible to see animals in their natural habitat while you are at the controls of the plane. Yes, you read it right. You can go on safari without leaving home. It’s not bad at all! However, first you have to know where to fix the point of interest, otherwise it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

If you want to get out of the routine of going from point A to point B and enjoy incredible views, as well as seeing animals in the wild, you just have to keep reading this guide. I am going to explain step by step what you have to do to see animals while you fly. The game’s developers, Asobo Studio, have made it very easy to search for all kinds of wildlife. Right now there are 26 points of interest with animals. Don’t expect to see big cats , for now there are mostly elephants, seagulls, giraffes, gray bears and little else.

How to see animals while you fly

Get comfortable, grab your favorite drink and something to eat, a trip awaits you that will leave you open-mouthed. Once you are ready you have to open the game and go to the world map. On the left, in the search bar, you have to enter the word fauna . You will get a series of results. They are points of interest where there are animals. Simply select a location, set it as output, and click Fly . No need to search for the nearest airport. If you select the point of interest as the exit, you will appear directly over the place.

From the world map you can go anywhere in the world

Once in the cabin of the plane, I recommend you press the End button to switch to the exterior view and zoom out, so the field of view is greater and it is easier to see where the animals are. If you wish, you can play with the camera by enlarging the image to see more closely what is on land.

From the outside view you can see the landscape better

When it comes to seeing animals, it is better not to activate the automatic pilot, otherwise you will fly quite high and it is more difficult to see what is on the ground. Much better if you take control of the aircraft and fly as low as possible. Finally, one more thing. Trying to land close to the animals is not a good idea , they will flee far from place.

How to do stunts in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft Flight Simulator is much more than flying a plane from one airport to another , you can also fly over points of interest such as the highest mountains, monuments and even see animals in their natural habitat. Now, nobody said that it was not possible to get carried away and do all kinds of stunts. However, the latter requires being a good pilot, otherwise you can end up crashing the plane.

We could say that doing pirouettes is easier than taking off and landing the plane. At first it may seem the opposite, but if you have never tried to carry out maneuvers that sometimes seem truly crazy, once you try you will see that it is not so bad . You just have to practice for a bit and you’ll have it mastered. In the worst case, if you find that you have lost control, you just have to activate the autopilot .

How to do pirouettes and not die trying

Before you start you can do two things. The first, to leave directly in flight by selecting any point of interest and setting that point as departure . The second option would be to take off from any airport. By the way, if you want to know how to take off correctly, I invite you to take a look at our guide.

To do pirouettes, the first of all is to maintain a constant speed and fly at a considerable height. The latter is very important in case you lose control of the plane, so you have time to try to regain control of the aircraft. If you do both, you just have to use the 8, 2, 4 and 6 keys on the numeric keypad to move the rudder .

A plane is perfect for doing tricks as it is very small and light

If you want to control the main flight control surfaces it is worth memorizing certain keyboard shortcuts , they are the following:

  • Left Aileron (Left Roll): Num 4
  • Right Aileron (Right Roll): Num 6
  • Center Aileron Rudder: Num 5
  • Elevator Down (Pitch Down): Num 8
  • Elevator Up (Pitch Up): Num 2
  • On / off water rudder: Ctrl + w
  • Left rudder (yaw left): Num 0
  • Right Rudder (Right Yaw): Enter

When you are talking about a flight simulator, you may have to spend some time doing the stunts. Microsoft Flight Simulator is a game that has real-time weather conditions . Trying to do pirouettes on a sunny day without wind is not the same as a rainy day with strong gusts of wind.
