The Miner is one of the alters you can create from Rapidium in the Quantum Computer. And he is one of the most problematic characters in The Alters, as he suffers from severe PTSD and will soon decide to amputate his arm. In this guide, we will tell you how to help him with his arm, whether you should talk him out of amputation, and how to get his arm back and his trust in the future.
Jan Schachter is aggressive and confrontational by default. You will understand this after you start talking to the alter inside the Maw. And what scares him most is not even the fact that he is your alternative version, a clone created from an alien resource, but the presence of a hand, which, based on the constructed chain of memories, he lost in the past, but now it flaunts on his right shoulder as if nothing had happened. His phantom pain will continue to develop with each passing day. From this point on, as you progress through the main story of The Alters, everything only becomes more problematic.
Ian Miner’s phantom pain is the first problem you’ll have to deal with after creating him in The Alters. He’ll constantly complain about this pain and ask for more and more medication to dull the pain. The medication works, but eventually it will become so unbearable that he’ll die in an accident one day, so if you want to keep him alive and healthy, you’ll need to act fast.
The solution to Jan the Miner’s problem is to amputate his problematic arm. Keeping him under the influence of painkillers will simply lead to an accident at work. First there will be normal injuries, and then a fatal one. So amputation is the only way out. In fact, he will cut off his own arm if you stop pumping him with drugs, which will only worsen your communication in general (although the situation will still be fixable). So, as soon as you see the corresponding dialogue option, for the sake of everyone, choose to amputate Jan the Miner’s arm.
If you don’t have a hospital where he can get himself in order, then after a few days Jan Shakhtar will die from infection.
Prosthetic arm or serum?
After Jan the Miner recovers, you will be given a choice on how to help him with the absence of his arm (after all, without it, he is simply useless). At first, there will be an opportunity to create a prosthetic arm, but then the Mechanic will offer to create a new arm from the rapidium that Jan Dolsky used to make the alters themselves. If you can make a whole person, then why can’t rapidium be used to create one limb? After talking to the Scientist, you will learn about a special serum that will restore the amputated limb. There is not much difference between these two options, so choose the solution that you think is better.
When Jan Schachter gets his right arm back, a new problem will arise. He will become self-absorbed and go into work , working overtime, staying on 12-hour shifts without breaks. This could eventually kill him, as overtime exposes a man to more radiation from the planet, so you need to act quickly. Or manually assign him to work every day and remove him before the planet is covered in radiation.
Jan Miner’s new mental problems can be solved in the Reflection Room, an important core module that can be unlocked through research. Assign Miner to the Reflection Room and contact him after the session. Repeat this several times and he will return to normal.
Jan the Miner is one of the best alters in the game as he increases mining efficiency, so keep a close eye on him during his cooldown and provide him with everything he needs. He will also have some cool quests for you later in The Alters.
